Face Your Fear Of Heights At Schlegeis 131
You will get the ultimate adrenaline kick at Schlegeis 131. The 131 stands for the height (in metres) of the dam wall that you can abseil down and climb up. They also offer a flying fox and giant swing.
Getting there
On the drive to Lake Schlegeis, we spotted the massive dam wall. Every time you enter Lake Schlegeis with your car you have to pay 12 €. Alternatively you can take the bus 4102 from Mayrhofen.
There is a car park directly next to the dam wall and the Schlegeis 131 office.
Flying fox
We walked along the top of the dam wall to the other side of the valley to start the flying fox. The flying fox was a good warm-up before the climbing. The flying fox ran parallel with the dam wall, was rapid and goes for 600m above the valley floor.
Abseil
We stood on the grated abseiling platform and avoided looking down. The hardest part was the start where I had to take my feet off the platform and put all my weight onto the rope. The dam wall is curved so I was lowered rapidly until I could touch the wall then abseiled the remainder. I waited at the bottom for Tammy. I looked up and couldn’t believe that we had to climb all the way back up.
Via Ferrata
The wall had U shaped steel bars protruding out of the wall. We moved our feet from bar to bar and held onto the line as we climbed. Every few metres we would have to remove one carabiner from the line and reattached it to the next above. Then the same with the second carabiner so we were always attached. As the wall is curved, the angle of climbing was easier at the start and harder at the top. For the last section of the climb, we could choose to take a diagonal way up or vertical way up. I decided to take the vertical route directly to the top as I wanted to finish as quickly as possible. The last section was extremely strenuous on my arms and hands (even through gloves). It was an incredible feeling when I reached the top.
Where we stayed?
We stayed in an apartment hotel at Hells Ferienresort Fügen. We absolutely loved the room, especially the wood design and the kitchen.
There are a few more accommodation and food options in the main town of Mayrhofen. We stopped in Mayrhofen for delicious ribs and lamb cutlets at Hotel & Gasthof Perauer. Another restaurant that we recommend is Schnitzelstation Klammlhof for a 500g schnitzel!
